Senegalese head of state Macky Sall, also chairman of the African Union (AU), discussed the conflict between Russia and Ukraine with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday, April 11. As Sall announced in his tweet, Zelensky expressed his will to "make a communication to the AU."
"I thank President [Zelensky] for his call today. We discussed the impact of the war in Ukraine on the global economy and the need to prioritize dialogue for a negotiated outcome to the conflict," Sall wrote on his Twitter account. "I also noted his request to make a communication to the AU," he added.
Sall announced on March 9 that he had called Russian President Vladimir Putin to "request a lasting ceasefire" in Ukraine. On February 24, the first day of the Russian invasion, the African Union called on Russia to respect "the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of Ukraine" while urging Moscow and Kyiv to establish an "immediate ceasefire" and open negotiations under the auspices of the UN.
The war in Ukraine, now in its seventh week, has forced some 4.3 million people out of the country, according to the UN. Another 7.1 million are internally displaced.
