Senegal: The President urges to battle for food sovereignty

The Senegalese President has called for an individual and collective effort and resilience in winning the battle for food sovereignty as soon as possible.

President Macky Sall called for a general mobilization to develop local food products to contain better the price shocks caused by the war in Ukraine.

The Senegalese President addressed his fellow citizens during the traditional speech to the nation on the eve of Independence Day on 4 April.

"Considering the high risk of shortages and price hikes due to the global crisis, I call for a general mobilization to increase and enhance the value of our agricultural, livestock, and fisheries products," urged the Head of State.

"To be protected from the vagaries of the international situation, we must, through an individual and collective effort on ourselves, show resilience by winning the battle for food sovereignty as soon as possible," he said.

"I urge the nation's active forces, in particular young people, women and the private sector, to invest more in the value chains of livestock, fisheries and agriculture," President Macky Sall insisted.

Sall noted that independence is not an isolated act of one day but a permanent struggle, which is also won on the front of food security.

"This is what adds to national sovereignty an extra layer of freedom," he said, noting the need for people to produce what they consume and consume what they produce.

"This is the meaning of the massive investments that the State continues to devote to modernizing and diversifying the livestock, fisheries, and agriculture sectors," he insisted.

He recalled that the increase in subsidies for the agricultural campaign and the local rice sector is part of this perspective.
