Senegal condemns the "racist and degrading" treatment inflicted on one of its nationals in Italy

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad (MAESE) condemned a "racist, inhuman and degrading treatment inflicted on one of its citizens by Italian public security agents."

A video available on social networks is the source of the tension. It presents a Senegalese citizen being subjected to violence during an arrest by the police in Florence.

"The ministry strongly denounces and condemns this racist, inhuman and degrading treatment (...) all the more serious that it was committed by agents of public power supposed to respect the law and ensure the safety of people and property", stated the press release of the MAESE. It demanded that the authors of this "unspeakable cruelty" should be brought to justice.

"As soon as informed of the facts and the identity of the victim, the Senegalese embassy in Rome immediately addressed the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation," the statement said.

The Senegalese ambassador in Italy was also instructed to go to Florence to visit the victim and the Senegalese community living in this city in the center of western Italy. "The ministry will continue to follow this matter closely and reserves the right to take any other appropriate action," the statement added.
