Mali: failed coup and G5 Sahel withdrawal

On May 16, Malian authorities informed about a failed coup in a press release. The text read:

"With the unhealthy intention of breaking the dynamics of the Refoundation of Mali, a small group of Malian anti-progressive officers and non-commissioned officers attempted a coup on the night of May 11 to 12, 2022.

These soldiers were supported by a Western state. The attempt was foiled thanks to the vigilance and professionalism of Mali's Defense and Security Forces.

The Government of the Republic of Mali condemns with the utmost rigor this disgraceful attack on the security of the State, the objective of which is to hinder, even annihilate the substantial efforts to secure our country and the return to constitutional order, a guarantee of peace and stability.

As part of the investigation and the search for the accomplices involved in this disastrous project, the Government of the Republic of Mali informs that all the necessary means, as well as the appropriate measures have been deployed, in particular, the strengthening of exit controls from the city of Bamako and at the border posts of Mali.

In addition, those arrested will be made available to justice. The Government of the Republic of Mali reassures that the situation is under control and invites the population to calm down. May God bless Mali."

A day before the announcement, the Malian government also informed that the country had withdrawn from the G5 Sahel group operating in the region. Until now, the group congregated Mali, Mauritania, the Chad, Burkina Faso and Niger.

The statement informed: "The government of the Republic of Mali decides to withdraw from all organs and bodies of the G5 Sahel, including the joint force. This decision will be notified to the organization's member states in accordance with the procedure provided for in this matter.

The Government of the Republic of Mali reaffirms its constant commitment to regional integration and cooperation for the achievement of objectives that serve the major interests of the African peoples. "

Mali is undergoing a severe political crisis. It cut its ties with France, tightened its cooperation with Wagner group and is suspected of organizing an ethnic cleansing in Moura.
