Chérif Macky Sall – President of Senegal (since 2012), African Union (since 2022), statesman and peace advocate.
Having begun his political career in the Democratic Party of Senegal, Sall quickly rose through the ranks. From becoming mayor of Fatick, through becoming Minister of Mines, Energy and Water, and Internal Affairs successively, Sall became Prime Minister of Senegal and held this office until mid-2007. From June 2007 to November 2008, he held the post of President of the National Assembly. 4 years later, he was appointed to the honorable office of President of Senegal.
In the 2019 presidential election, Sall was re-elected to another five-year term with 58.3 percent of the votes. On 2 April 2019, he took the oath of office for his second term before the Constitutional Council in the presence of 18 African heads of state and government.
In August 2019, Sall attended the 2019 G7 Summit in Biarritz as the current President of NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa's Development). His main concerns were the North-South conflict, namely the fight against tax evasion and tax fraud by large international corporations operating in Africa, which could lead to the continent's financial ruin.
In his political work, Macky Sall bases his strategies on the true needs of the people he leads. The new political framework he crafted with the Senegalese government, called The Plan for an Emerging Senegal (PES), includes three main points:
• Structural transformation of the economic framework,
• Promotion of human capital,
• Good governance and the rule of law.
On 5 February 2022, Sall was elected chairman of the African Union for a one-year term. During his acceptance speech, he strongly highlighted the need to focus on peace and security, the fight against terrorism, environmental protection, health, economic and social development.
As a peace advocate, Macky Sall urged the Russian President in March 2022 for an immediate ceasefire and the opening of negotiations with the help of the UN.
