On February 24, the day after Russian invasion on Ukraine, President Macky Sall took the decision to lower the prices of basic foodstuffs. As the first in Africa, he foresaw the consequences of war in Europe and decided to provide lasting relief to Senegalese households in the face of rising prices.
However, some market agents opposed this solution and pushed their agenda of increasing food prices. In Wednesday’s meeting of the Council of Ministers, the President urged his government to take all measures necessary to protect the society. Especially in the period of which has just begun, the consumers face increased basket of goods prices. 90% of the Senegalese are Muslim.
"In the context of Ramadan and Lent, the Head of State asks the Minister of Trade and Small and Medium Enterprises to take all necessary measures to ensure the normal supply of foodstuffs and essential products to the markets, according to the officially set prices," reads the communiqué of the Council of Ministers.
At the beginning of his communication, the Head of State sent his best wishes to the Muslim community, on the occasion of the month of Ramadan. "In this special period of religious devotion, the President of the Republic prays for a Senegal of peace and prosperity in solidarity and inclusion."
President Sall also urged the Minister of Commerce to strengthen the promotion of consuming locally produced goods and to establish the processing and development of local grains. Celebrating the 62nd year of independence on April 4, the President reminded the Senegalese that difficult times require responsible behavior.
On another occasion in January, he praised the Delegation for Rapid Entrepreneurship for Women and Youth for the successful implementation of projects creating jobs for more than 60,000 young people and women in various parts of Senegal. These measures were taken as Sall’s program to bring Senegal to more independence.
