A project on the Involvement of digital media in the prevention of conflicts and tensions (Impact), funded by the European Union (EU), was launched on Tuesday in Abidjan.
Implemented by a consortium led by Avocats Sans Frontières France (ASF France) in partnership with the Network of Online Press Professionals of Côte d'Ivoired'Ivoire (REPPRELCI), this project aims to improve the capacity of digital media and journalists to collect, verify and disseminate credible and complete information to meet the right to information and thus maintain social peace.
The activities that will be implemented under this project will build the capacity of the media by equipping them with tools to maximize their potential and mobilize media and civil society actors against hate speech.
The project states that the media "must be able to play a central role in conflict prevention and benefit from the capacity building." The European Union granted one million euros for the initiative.
Speaking at the project's launch, the President of REPPRELCI, Lassina Sermé, called on all actors, namely press organizations, technical and financial partners, civil society and political and administrative authorities of the State to adhere to the project.
"I would like to invite all actors of the digital press in Ivory Coast to get involved in implementing this project so that it is successful," called Sermé.
The head of human rights programs, democratic governance and civil society of the European Union in Ivory Coast, Antonio Dal Borgo, reaffirmed the availability of the EU to be alongside the Ivorian authorities to accompany their efforts.
