Guinea: the military junta expects a 39-month transition

On Saturday, April 30, President Colonel Mamady Doumbouya announced publicly that in the course of consultations, the Guinean stakeholders agreed that the transition time will take 39 months. After this period, democratic elections will be organized.

"From all the consultations undertaken at all levels, since the beginning of the transition, with all the components of the nation, with all Guineans wherever they are, there emerges a middle proposal for a consensual duration of the Transition of 39 months," said Colonel Mamady Doumbouya. He added that the CNRD (the junta's political party) and the government will submit this proposal to the National Council of the Transition, which acts as parliament.

The reactions to the announcement differ depending on the political option. Some part of the opposition is against the measures taken by CNRD. On the other hand, the president of the Liberal Bloc (4th power in the National Council) Dr Faya Millimouno, finds this proposition reasonable.

"We find the timetable very reasonable because there are many things to do. We proposed 36 months, which means that our analysis corroborates theirs. In the life of a nation, 39 months are reasonable so that at the end of this transitional period, all Guineans can be," he said.

The currently leading junta took power by coup d’état on September 5, 2021. The previous president, Alpha Condé, changed the constitution to allow himself for a third term, sparking nationwide protests ending in the revolution led by the present leader and president interim, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya.
