On Sunday, the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, said his country wants to work with Senegal to develop gas fields off the coast of West Africa. Scholz spoke in Dakar with Senegalese President Macky Sall.
"We exchanged views on the subject and agreed to cooperate intensively on a technical level," the Chancellor said, without revealing more details.
In early May, the Bloomberg news agency reported that the EU was developing a plan to replace Russian gas imports with raw material from Nigeria, Senegal, Angola and other countries offering "untapped potential in the field of liquefied natural gas."
In Senegal, the production could start next year. But aware of the importance of his resource, Macky Sall is upping the ante.
"Senegal is ready to work towards supplying the European market with LNG (liquid natural gas), but first we need to be supported in our participation under better conditions than those currently offered by our partners.", explained the Senegalese president. Discussions will continue in Germany, which also wants to work more closely on solar and wind energy. Senegal has been invited to the G7 summit scheduled in June.
Dakar is the first stop on Olaf Scholz's first trip to Africa as Chancellor. He is scheduled to visit, among other countries, Niger and South Africa.
