ECOWAS decision appreciated by Guinean stakeholders

The Forum des Forces Sociales de Guinée requested the postponement of the April 25 ultimatum (more on the topic here). They cherished "the good sense" of the ECOWAS Heads of State for granting additional time to the Guineans. This will allow its government to find a national consensus regarding the duration and form of the power transition.

Concerning the protection of Guinean citizens as a priority, both sides agreed to postpone the critical decision. The country is in a fragile state; therefore, a rushed decision on the matter could bring about unexpected consequences. The ECOWAS representatives seem to understand that the stakeholders need to prepare propositions for the transition to be conducted peacefully.

The Forum of Social Forces of Guinea highlighted that the joint discussion should be carried out not by the government or Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, but CNRD and the vital forces following art.77 of the charter. Therefore, it invites the CNRD to initiate, with the support of ECOWAS and Guinea's friendly countries, direct and urgent consultations. The aim is to establish an appropriate framework to define the content and duration of the transition.

The Forum of Social Forces of Guinea invites all active stakeholders to get ready to harmonize approaches to the transition – the next meeting is to take place today, on Friday, April 29.
