Didier Budimbu, the Congolese Minister of Hydrocarbons, has been in Kuwait since Thursday 28 April. The objective of his visit is to discuss the Congolese oil and gas offer with Fouad Alghanim, head of the conglomerate Alghanim International. The next round of tenders for gas extraction in DRC will take place in June 2022.
The discussions focus on the issue of converting gas from Lake Kivu into electricity. Once operational, a project will effectively meet the energy needs of the local population.
Alghanim expressed his wish to apply for the tender, assessing the Congolese carbohydrate sector as "representing an interesting opportunity for the company he leads." He also wants to visit DRC "in the next few days" to work on potential cooperation.
Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes, shared by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. According to several estimates, it houses 60 billion m3 of dissolved methane and 300 billion m3 of CO2 that can be turned into more than 700 MW of electricity for at least 50 years.
