DRC and Kenya call on armed groups to "prioritize peace"

The first phase of consultations between the armed group representatives and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government ended on Wednesday 27 April, in Nairobi, Kenya. At the end of the meeting, the Kenyan and Congolese Presidents urged the armed groups of Ituri, North and South Kivu to take the peace path and lay down their arms, reports a dispatch from the communication service of the DRC Presidency.

Nearly 30 delegates representing armed groups from Ituri, North and South Kivu took part in five days of intense peace consultations attended by observers from Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, the United Nations, the ICGLR, the United States and France.

On Wednesday morning, all the armed groups of Ituri, North and South Kivu handed over their propositions on ways out of the armed tensions in eastern DRC. After the meeting, the delegates of the armed groups appeared optimistic about the outcome of these exchanges.

The Kenyan organizer announced a subsequent meeting in a few days, well ahead of the next East African Community Heads of State meeting scheduled for late May.
