Burkina Faso has set up its first pharmaceutical production plant, specializing in the production of generic drugs.
The factory was built on the outskirts of the capital Ouagadougou by the Propharm company. It will ensure the "permanent availability of the most requested drugs," according to its promoters.
Certified by an independent Spanish organization, it will start producing paracetamol 500 mg, phloroglucinol, an antispasmodic, as well as an "oral rehydration salt and zinc kit for the treatment of diarrhea" in the coming months, explained the CEO of Propharm, Armel Coéfé.
"Our production capacity, at present, satisfies the local need and solves the problem of drastic disruption, he added, specifying that the list of molecules to be produced will grow, in particular "with the production of drugs for the treatment of malaria."
According to Prime Minister Albert Ouédraogo, "it is an important factory, insofar as it will contribute to making medicines available to our populations at a lower cost. During the period of Covid-19, these questions were significant and everyone recognized the need to develop local production of medicines. It is also a local company, which contributes to developing a resilient economy."
According to Armal Coéfé, the factory is taking final steps to obtain marketing authorizations in the coming months.
